Touring Tuscany Day 3 - The Leadbetters and Carson's escape - KIDLESS

Much Thanks to Brian and Farrah as they grabbed our kids for the day! We escaped at 9am and headed for Cinqua Terra, one of the most beautiful places. Chris and I have fond memories of hiking between the 5 towns 10 years ago (yikes right?). The water is so blue, the seafood pasta so yummy and the wine – well, its Italy right?

First we drove to La Spezia and began the never ending search for a parking spot. Guess when they built these cities MANY hundreds of years ago, they didn’t take MILLLIONS of tourists into consideration…… So we ‘snuck’ into a little spot outside of a bridge and crossed our fingers our little car would be there when we got back.

With tickets through the towns and back we opted to head straight to the last one (and most beautiful in our opinion) Monterosso. We figured if we had time we would hike along the trail. But with priorities in mind (food, wine and water) we needed to get moving.

The lunch cafĂ© was perfect – after the food was gone, the boys left us to find a good spot on the beach. While Chelcy and I were reaching for our wallet to pay, a sweet local artist showed up. Great timing right? He told us all about his charcoal drawings and how famous he was in the area. We chose to buy his story as well as ‘buy’ his art.

Lemon Chello anyone?  Nice Mugs -)

We found the boys along the beach. They were already submerged in the Mediterranean sea and had positioned themselves close to a pretty lady in a yellow bikini. Chelcy and I joined them in the water. It was really rather warm (warmer than our Villa pool) We floated for a bit and grabbed some souveiner rocks for Nick. As we were getting out of the water, it was noted that the pretty lady in the yellow bikini opted to use her top to protect her eyes. That comment from Chelcy had me laughing all day.

Our next J Crew model!
Can you see the man holding up the mountain?

We stopped for a little gelato and hit the train for the return trip back to La Spetzia. We even managed to help a few other tourists along the way. Our arrival home was 1600 on the dot. All kids were sleeping. Good work McCulloughs!

That night was an amazing dinner by Yasi a caterer I found. She made amazing food for both us and the kids. It was a gourmet dinner that we never left home for.

Once the kids were done eating they had a blast running along the grass with little glow straws. At one point I gave a hug to Anna and she was sweating the sweet smell of bug spray, fresh grass and lotion. Honestly, they are all the best kids!

We took break in between courses to put them to bed. It surely made dessert that much more enjoyable.

Touring Tuscany Day 2 - agriturismo

What is an agriturisma? - well, its a combination of the words for "agriculture" and "tourism" in Italian - is a style of vacationing in farm house resorts codified into Italian law in 1985. An agriturismo vacation is suitable for the whole family and some places even be very romantic or luxurious.

An Italian agriturismo will usually serve foods to guests prepared from raw materials produced on the farm or at least locally. Some will allow the guest to actually participate in the activities surrounding the farm. Despite the rural nature of the lodging, one might expect a rustic experience; yet many agriturismi (the plural form of agriturismo) feature rather luxurious accommodation as well as swimming pools.

Lindsey researched a beautiful one in our area. It was a bit outside our driving radius (only because we logged so many hours the previous day) but once we arrived we enjoyed wonderful dishes, amazing wine and they had a bounce house to boot! Yippee for the kids as the wine just wasn't there thing. It was a nice bonding event together as we all rolled out at the same time cars packed.

On the road again....

Mr. Deakon taught me this...
Someone stopped for a 'pee' break along the way. - no it wasnt me...
Family shot.

Sweet couple (no kids running around for them)
Shane's Bottle
Chelcy's Bottle
Lunch is served
Can we get this group together in 1... 2....
3!!!!!!
We got back that evening ready to enjoy a little pool time with the kids. We set the boys out in search of dinner for the evening. They were quite successful and returned with pasta made with squid ink. Yum?!

Watermetlon spitting contest - organized by our party planner Farrah

On a munchkin note - The beginning of the week we seems to experience a mosquito hatching of sorts.  All the little guys got eaten up.  Tate tallied 64 bug bites while Nick woke up with collar flower ear and a bit of a swollen ear from a bite.  Of course the kids rallied on and the parent grabbed some bug spray.  'Tis the season I would imagine.

With kids to bed, the adults enjoyed lively discussion spiced by a dating game Iphone app. After a few questions Vivian came down telling us we were too loud and they couldn't sleep. We relocated to the pool area and chatted for hours. I loved every second of getting to know everyone, from tattoos. to jobs of the past, growing up tales to a soar question that ended the night. That was what I envisioned every night to look like and was brimming with a feeling of success and the dynamics of our group.

Deakon had the honor of 'tapping' that jug of wine!  Good work

Touring Tuscany Day 1 - Travel

Its Saturday morning at 4:30 – Alarms go off (did we really sleep) its time to embark on the epic vacation. We have SO many moving parts that just reviewing it makes my head spin. I am trying to capture so much because I know one day Chelcy and I will be in a nursing home together arguing about the details so now I am making a record!!

5:20 AM – the car is packed to the gills and the boys are off. Nick it over the moon about a bar trip and Shane is still in his jammies wondering why his folks find it so easy to disturb his slumber. I later learn that Nick had to pee within 20 minutes of departure. Ooops…

Chelcy and I tried going back to sleep on the coach with a football game in the background – but no luck, we were full of nerves and excitement (you pick who had which one). Chelcy went downstairs in hopes of finding a hot shower (Deakon’s was frigid as we forgot to mention our hot water heater is set on a timer that I am uncertain about adjusting) she had no luck, but was no longer in need of coffee.

6:45 - we were out the door with backpacks on ready to hit the bus. I had her taking photos of the bus and train schedule so she could be the expert traveler during her return trip with Deakon. We managed to have a quick hot drink at the airport and boarded the plane for Florence.

11:30 – we arrive in Florence and Chelcy enjoyed every second of her prop plane tour. Maybe she is ready for Deakon to take her on a romantic ride in the skies…. We check in with the boys who have made it to Switzerland by now. We nabbed a Taxi and hit the streets of Florence – directly to the Duomo for some wine and pasta!
While we were navigating planes, trains, and taxis........  I hear Shane can be entertained by a waffle for hours - he has 4 teeth now and really puts them to work
Not a bad rest stop
Here is the final push to Tuscany.  I know this because they are following the McCulloughs who do not appear to be carrying a bike anymore.....

Back to Chelcy and Sara.........After we started headed to the Porto Vecchia and got turned around a bit. During our misdirection we both determined our bags were a bit heavenly and luckily our next turn brought us to the train station. We figured that must be a sign. So we boarded the train that was due to arrive in Lucca at 15:30. Impressive timing!

15:30 we arrived in Lucca (thanks to the couple in front of us who were also headed to Lucca) Only a minor altercation with the Italian ticket checker (we never ‘validated’ the train ticket – guess my excitement over just purchasing the ticket currently, finding the track and boarding the train within5 minutes was now totally negated. Thankfully we looked enough like tourists that our fine was reduced to 5 Euro instead of 80! Wonder if the guys would have experienced the same luck…) We hailed another cab – showed him the print out of our destination and off we went. Villa Mori bound!

You can see the pool from the entrance of our villa.  Ahh...
16:00 and we were the 1st to arrive which was helpful to Silvia, the Villa Mori care taker. She toured the grounds with us handing our towels, sheets and keys while Chelcy and I tried determining family locations. Within 30 minutes our crew started arriving. It was like clockwork.

1st - Lundy, Bob, Brayden & a STARVING Madeline arrived from a night before in Italy to break the trip

2nd - Lindsey & Chris pulled in (expert drivers as they not only had no kids, but lived in the area for 5 years!)

3rd - Diane, Wayne, Eve & Anna arrived from a night before as well

4th - Farrah, Brian, Tate & Macy with Chris, Deakon, Nick & Shane closely behind as they were very lucky to be close in proximity during the drive as I will only reference the incident regarding a top mounted bike rack. Refer to Farrah’s blog in case she offers more detail.

Everyone got out of the car to enjoy a MUCH needed stretch of the legs. The kids immediately took to the AWESOME playground and green grass running space. The ladies sat down to discuss the rooming layout. Wayne was the rock star that night as he had the forethought to purchase Italian meat, cheese and the infamous bottle of wine that aided our discussion and helped fill the bellies of starving adults and children for hours!

After assignments were made the ladies ventured out to grab 16+ pizzas at the nearest joint and fill the fridges with beer for a few non-wining drinking hubbies. If you can believe it, pizza finding was a cinch, beer finding, IMPOSSIBLE. Farrah and I drove for 30+ minutes while Chelcy and Lindsey enjoyed happy hour at the Pizza place. We finally discovered a Lidl. As we ran with excitement to its doors we realized they weren’t opening. It was 20:07 and it closed at 20:00. It’s a German store so boy are they prompt! Thankfully a sweet Italian on a vespa (which we saw 1 million of) directed us to the COOP which was a HUGE store open until 21:00. Jackpot! We ran through the aisles grabbing snacks, fruit and wine (aisles of wine, while beer was only an end capper – we are in Italy right?)

The Boys made Mac&Cheese for the kids as our adventures lasted longer than anticipated – so only the adults dined on pizza. It felt good to unpack that night. We sat around the table chatting all night enjoying the jug of wine and many other elements of Italy’s finest. Most importantly we were all there together!

Blessed with Friends again!

Thursday morning our best buddies Chelcy and Deakon Carson made the trek from Georgetown Texas to spend a whirl wind of a week with us. I stood that the terminal with Shane (who they had not met yet) just dying to see if Chelcy survived the flight (with all her traveling anxieties). I caught a glimpse of her as she too was searching for us. It that moment I totally teared up. The vacation we were all waiting for was finally about to start. I love how friends like that can just fill your hearts!

O.k., enough with the mushy stuff and on with the fun!

We brought them home for a brat and brotchen lunch and let them catch an afternoon nap with the boys. That night we walked them to our favorite German restaurant and scooted for the LARGEST airplane to hit the skies. With every airplane, Chelcy yelled, is this it? To which Deakon finally said - it will look like it got stung by a bee' Yup.....

On Friday we scored a sweet babysitter and headed downtown stuttgart for the Weindorf (wine fest)
Picinic dinner for the dudes before we left
The Schlossplatz - our favorite spot
Its Friday night - just a few folks were there.
We had a sampling of many german foods that night - Maultaschen, Zwiebelrostbraten, Spätzle, and of course - the 1/2 meter weiner!
