The travelers

From IL, we flew with my folks to camp Carlson in CT....

When we left VA, I packed a carry on bag for me and the 3 boys, I also packed a huge box that got shipped to my folks AND packed the car for our trip to Maine in mid August. Therefore I think i was rather justified in feeling like I was truly losing my mind in the days before our departure.... But being here at the airport was totally worth it (so will the other adventures along the way)

We had a teary eyed good bye to Dad as he flew back to VA to dive i at his new job. I found so meaningful to see Nicks true emotion when saying bye for now....

Meanwhile, on the plane--or nap city as goomba calls it.... drew is out, and so is Shane if u can see him on the other side of my dad,

I love how well our boys have 'learned' to travel, they are helpful and truly love the adventure.

But one of the true joys of parenting for me is catching my kids doing the right thing..., its why I love this video. At the end when I finally came upon nick and Shane, they weren't sword fighting or wrestling, they were claiming their own baggage and helping out.

But yes' drew is super cute pushing the suitcase, I LOVE how many folks he made smile. I'm pretty sure he is posted on lots of Japanese travelers websites;). They loved him!!

Just a few years in between

When planning our trip to Rockford, Chris remembered his old college buddy Brain Hannon and their family live in Napersville (closer to Chicago) so he sent him and email (with our itinerary) in case there was a chance we could link up. Brain and his family offered to come to Rockford to watch the minor league team--Rockford aviators. They had all driven by Rockford many times but never stopped, (now they know why). But how awesome to connect after 11 years

These guys haven't changed a bit

Only added some wives and kids in the years in between.

So cool catching up with old friends and erasing the years in between. thank you Brian and Ali for helping to bridge that gap we loved the evening!!

Hartman memorial weekend

Or grandmother passed away in February just after her 95th birthday. Instead of the family flying in for the funeral her children saw the value in honoring her through a family gathering later in the summer. They debated the location, lakes, Colorado, parks.... What made the most sense?

Rockford Illinois.

None of us live there anymore, but my grandparents lived there all their lives (minus summers and a few years in AZ). Their children (our parents) were born there and when you think about it, after this memorial weekend, will we go back? Most likely not.

We flew from VA, my folks flew in from CT, my sister drove from MA, my cousins, Aunts and Uncles flew from CA, TX, CO. Everyone blood related was there-to include all the next generation.

I love that my Aunt Louise invested the time in some family reunion t-shirts.

The blue shirts on tops are my Uncle Kens (oldest child) family (they have lived in CA as long as I can remember, Matt, Caiti, Emily and Allison live in CA, Jeff and Luz are expecting their first baby and live in CA, Linnsey, Mike, Braden, Mikala, and baby to be #3 live in TX.
The red shirts are my mom's (middle child) family
The black shirts are my Uncle Russ's (youngest child) family (he has lived in the Midwest area ranging from Indianapolis, Chicago and currently Michigan). My cousins Rachel and Greg both flew in from CO

Funny face photo--everyone seems to stick out their tongue..

Little bump in the road. Small trip to a local clinic for some super glue

Bus tour=nap time for this crew

But for the rest of us, we toured all the old haunts. The house my grandparents first lived it, we heard stories from uncle ken about using a BB gun to break the street light, my mom told stories of polishing my grandpas car-I would imagine driving down those streets just brings it all back.

Here are the 3 siblings at their High school--what does ERAB stand for? Eastern Red And Black.

Remember this movie? Based on this team, Rockford had a few claim to fames.. (Other than the Hartmans)

More family historic homes.. We thought this was the home my grandparents lived in when their oldest son ken was born. After our return
we were showing my grandmothers brother these photos and turns out we might be mistaken.. Uncle ken was thinking he would just recognize it... Well it has been a few years,

Although my grandparents were both cremated there is a memorial stone in the cemetery surrounded by their family. We took the bus there to spread their ashes and have a family moment together.

In the ashes from my grandfather there was a paper written by my cousin while she was in middle school. She read it to all of us as it just seemed fitting, a great piece on my grandfather, the flag and devotion.

From there we visited the fire station where my grandfather served for many years

The bus tour ended with LOTs of pizza 'to go style' from Capri! Here we all are indulging in the Hartman Hub.

I promise we didn't eat the ENTiRE time, but here was the crew again at the Stockholm inn. A truly amazing breakfast place I'm Rockford. It's huge (my mom reserved a room for our family) well attended and FABULOUS!

After a filling breakfast we hit the Coco keys water park where some of us needed a nap

While some just 'soaked it all up'!

The walk to the water slides

Happy little man

A tentative little man

We escaped the water park for a brief bit to snap a cousin photo... Here we are in age order-from right to left---Matt, Jeff, Me, Stosh, Linnsey, Greg, Rachel

The serious pose

Followed by a little crazy

Kudos to the cousins for the miles that separate us, we truly enjoy each others company, how different we are in age, background, location and it all just works.

Check out the next iteration,

Thanks Mom, Uncle Ken, Uncle Russ for orchestrating such a wonderful memorial weekend. Grandma Doris and Grandpa Roy who were never afraid to travel were honored to know the miles we all traveled to remember them.

Anniversary part 2

With a quiet house and a full heart - what could possibly top the time with friends - how bout an anniversary date part 2.  What a sweet celebration - my father secured the hotel via price line while the leadbetter secured the grand kids for a night so Chris and I could escape - kidless!!

Look at these smiles of relaxation!  Subway and all.
Thanks to a great rec from Teresa and a fabulous score by my dad - we stayed at the W in downtown DC.  AMAZING.  Really.

This is the view from the lounge upstairs.
I mean seriously?
This sniper photo is for you Macy.
Cheers to 10 years to the most wonderful partner in crime.

After that toast we headed on our voyage to dinner
Christopher hasn't lost his traveling edge and being in DC 0 it was time to soak up the culture - so into the Occidental for a little history and a drink.
Can you see the crack in the mirror as a small scar from the earthquake.
onto the next recommendation - fries at Olley's Trolley - FABULOUS IDEA!
Best fries on the books
You think they don't want us touching the antiques?  Hmmmm.
Now I am stopping to be a tourist - why, because I am exhausted.  It is 90+ degrees and the restaurant my husband of 10 years made reservations at was..... 2.5 miles away!!  Yes, this was only reveled via google maps later after I decided to check...  So this photo op was WELL NEEDED
Stay - take another photo
Here is the need for another beer stop along the way - seriously, are we there yet?
Halaleuyeah!  We made it. - not a moment too soon.  Chris made this reservation as this restaurant originated in Florence and was my sister's favorite place and we visited twice while we were there - lets see if the USA version holds up.
cheers again
a yummy dinner of salad, pasta, T bone, and wine.

So as they say, fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice, shame on ME!.  We are not walking!  Lets take a bike
Such a more relaxing way to take in the sights.

DC is truly an amazing city to soak in.  Culture on every corner.
We were able to see so much

favorite photo of the evening

MLK
Monuments often require no further explanation
We went from reserving the bikes for 30 minutes to touring for over an hour.  It was amazing.  The night was finally cool, the lighting amazing, the crowds sleeping.  We loved it.

This was our hotel room - so cool how the frosted glass from the shower is what separated the room
The next morning was pancakes at Lincoln's house of Pancakes - right across from Fords Theater.
After a quick subway ride home and a dip in the pool it was time for reality.  Nice form Chris and Nick (underwater already)
With our recent heat wave - the pool was quite warm....  But still wet - hehe!
Thanks so much for our little retreat together.  It takes a village to make it all possible - But it takes a great man to keep us all together and moving in the right direction.  I love you Chris - different than 10 years ago and in ways I never would have imagined.
